Nigerian music star and Grammy-nominated artist David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about how his father’s guidance transformed a spontaneous act into an annual tradition of donating to orphanages.
In an interview on The Morning Hustle, an American music podcast, Davido shared that it all began with a random tweet on his birthday, where he posted his account number asking fans to send him money. To his surprise, he received nearly $400,000.
He explained, “Two years ago on my birthday, I randomly tweeted my account number, saying, ‘It’s my birthday, send me money.’ My fans ended up sending about $400,000. It became a huge story.
“I was unsure what to do with the money until my dad called and said, ‘You know you can’t keep that money, right?’ That’s when we decided to donate it all to orphanages. We did it the first year and then again the second year. Now, it’s a tradition.”
Earlier this year, in February 2024, Davido announced a ₦300 million donation to orphanages nationwide. To mark his 32nd birthday on November 21, he made another ₦300 million contribution, this time supporting orphanages and a charity dedicated to fighting drug abuse among Nigerian youth.
