A heated war of words has erupted on social media between prominent Nigerian rapper Erigga and Afrobeats superstar Davido, sparking a wider conversation about privilege and self-made success in the music industry.

How the Online Clash Started

The online feud began after Erigga took to his social media platform to praise independent artists who built their careers from the ground up. He shared a post offering a direct shoutout to musicians who succeeded “out the mud” without relying on family wealth or influential connections.

This sentiment did not sit well with Davido, who famously comes from an affluent background as the son of billionaire business mogul Adedeji Adeleke. Reacting to the post, the “Unavailable” singer dismissed Erigga’s motivational stance, labeling it “useless.” Davido argued that individuals from wealthy families who still work hard to reach the top also deserve recognition and respect for their grind.

Erigga Delivers a Sharp Clapback

Not one to back down, Erigga quickly fired back at the singer, suggesting that Davido was unnecessarily triggered by a post that was meant to uplift the less privileged. In a series of follow-up posts, the Warri-born rapper questioned why a message celebrating grassroots artists would cause Davido to “crash out” online.

Erigga wrote: “Big man pikin dey cry say poor men children de hail dem self??? Motivate your self naw. Ambassador of RICH KIDS.”

He further questioned the logic of Davido’s outrage, wondering how a simple acknowledgment of those who struggled without financial backing could provoke such an intense reaction from someone of his stature.

Industry Reactions

The public spat has divided fans and music commentators alike. While some defend Davido’s perspective, arguing that coming from wealth does not diminish the hard work required to maintain a global music career, others side with Erigga. Supporters of the rapper argue that artists starting with zero financial backing face unique, monumental hurdles that deserve distinct praise.
