Nigerian music sensation Tems is set to grace a global stage, performing alongside an illustrious lineup of international icons at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The highly anticipated dedication ceremony, scheduled for Thursday, June 18, promises to be a spectacular event watched by millions worldwide.

A Constellation of Global Talent Unveiled

The Obama Foundation recently announced the star-studded roster of performers for the event, confirming Tems will share the spotlight with legendary artists such as John Legend, Marc Anthony, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Common, Eddie Vedder, The Roots, and U2’s The Edge. Actress and producer Marsai Martin is also slated to perform.

Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett articulated the profound significance of the occasion, stating, “This Grand Opening ceremony will be unlike any other, filled with music, performances, and hope.”

Tems’ inclusion in this exclusive ensemble is a testament to her phenomenal rise over the past four years, solidifying her status as one of Africa’s most recognizable artists globally. She stands as the sole Nigerian act on the bill, representing a small group of international artists selected for what the Foundation terms a ‘once-in-a-generation celebration of democracy, culture, and hope’.

Her remarkable journey includes becoming the first African woman to top the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022 with her feature on Future’s ‘Wait For U’ (also featuring Drake). That same year, Tems captivated audiences with a memorable performance at the FIFA World Cup closing ceremony in Qatar.

The Obama Presidential Center: A New Landmark in Chicago

The state-of-the-art Obama Presidential Center, a magnificent $850 million complex, has been financed entirely through private donations, making it the most expensive presidential library ever constructed. Spanning a vast 19.3-acre campus within Chicago’s historic Jackson Park, the Center is poised to become a significant cultural and civic hub.

The dedication ceremony will commence at 11 a.m. CT at the Center’s John Lewis Plaza, where former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are scheduled to deliver keynote speeches. While the event itself is invite-only, the Obama Foundation is ensuring accessibility for the public by hosting a free watch party on Midway Plaisance. Additionally, the full ceremony will be livestreamed globally, allowing audiences worldwide to partake in the historic moment.

The Center will officially open its doors to the public on Juneteenth, June 19, with celebrations extending throughout the weekend, inviting visitors to explore its extensive facilities and exhibitions.
