Grammy-winning Nigerian artist Temilade Openiyi, known globally as Tems, has offered a profound glimpse into her creative process, describing music not merely as a passion but as a powerful form of therapy. The acclaimed singer-songwriter revealed that writing music is a crucial tool for processing emotions, releasing pain, and achieving a state of wholeness.
Speaking in a recent interview with EE72 Magazine, Tems shared how the act of creation plays a restorative role in her life. She explained that engaging with songwriting helps her to externalize and dissipate emotional pain, ultimately contributing to her personal healing journey.
The Therapeutic Power of Songwriting
Tems elaborated on the transformative impact of her craft, stating that once a song is completed, she experiences a significant emotional release. “Writing music helps me release pain and it helps me to heal,” Tems explained. “By the time I am done, everything I felt, it is gone. I can let the whole situation go. I can forgive. I can move on.” This powerful aftereffect, she noted, makes it easier for her to let go of situations, forgive, and progress.
Authenticity and Self-Acceptance in Artistry
Beyond the personal healing aspect, Tems also touched upon her unapologetic approach to her art and self. She emphasized a strong sense of self-awareness and a refusal to seek external validation, stressing that she is not attempting to prove her worth to anyone.
“I am not trying to prove who I am. I know what is for me and what is not for me,” she asserted. Tems concluded by expressing her desire to fully immerse herself in every experience, striving to make the most of each moment rather than conforming to outside expectations.
