Actor and comedian Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has called out NIDCOM chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa over her reaction to singer Wasiu Ayinde, aka KWAM1’s, recent airport incident.
The controversy began after KWAM1 clashed with ValueJet staff at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, last Tuesday, when he was reportedly stopped from boarding with a flask suspected to contain alcohol. During the altercation, the aircraft’s pilot, Captain Ranti Ogoyi, alleged that the singer spilled the contents on her while they tried to settle the matter.
KWAM1 was also said to have stood in front of the aircraft in an attempt to block its departure, narrowly avoiding injury as it taxied.
Following public criticism, the Fuji star issued an apology to President Tinubu, the flight captain, his fans, and anyone offended by his behaviour. Dabiri-Erewa, a known associate of KWAM1, posted a video of the apology with the caption: “Kwam1’s apology on the airport incident. To err is human.”
Many Nigerians found her response insensitive, arguing that it appeared to excuse wrongdoing solely on the basis of an apology.
Reacting via X, Mr Macaroni accused her of setting a dangerous precedent by suggesting public figures could commit offences and escape consequences with a mere apology.
“Ma, I just want to say that this is highly reprehensible. You don’t deserve to hold a public office. You have set a very dangerous precedent with this tweet. You have told Nigerians it is okay to commit a crime and then issue an apology to absolve yourself without consequences,” he wrote.
