Singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has shared his thoughts on the relationship between Nigerian parents and children who provide financial support to their families.
Rema believes that parents are generally more tolerant and less judgmental toward children who play a key role in supporting the household financially.
During a conversation with content creator Enzo, Rema made this point while encouraging him to get a tattoo similar to his own. Enzo, however, expressed reluctance, citing his mother’s disapproval and recalling how she once gave him the silent treatment for days simply because he braided his hair.
In response, Rema advised him to focus on working hard and becoming a major contributor to his family’s income. He emphasized that once a child takes on the role of breadwinner, Nigerian parents are often more lenient and less likely to criticize their lifestyle choices.
Their conversation ran thus …
Enzo: “My mum won’t let me get a tattoo. The time I did braids, she didn’t talk to me for days. It was bad.”
Rema: “Don’t worry, you just need to hustle a little bit more. Wait till you cash out big. Nigerian parents don’t advise breadwinners.”
Rema has previously opened up about his role as the breadwinner of his family from a young age. Following the death of his father, he had to take on financial responsibilities during his teenage years.
The music star revealed that he made his first million naira at the age of 17. Rather than spending it on himself, he chose to give the entire amount to his mother.
