The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has stirred controversy after asserting that Peter Obi, former presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, will never become Nigeria’s president.
Wike made the remarks during a speech shared via X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @ChuksEricE. The minister was reacting to reports of a new coalition by opposition figures aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.
Wike began by criticizing Rauf Aregbesola, ex-Minister of Interior, over his performance while in office, stating:
“These are the same people that want to rescue Nigeria. You were the minister of interior but under you, the international passport—people would spend weeks, months, even years before they could get one.”
He then shifted focus to Peter Obi, questioning his credibility and dismissing his future political aspirations:
“For eight years, he was governor, and he didn’t conduct a single local government election. Never. Only you, governor of all the local governments.”
Wike also slammed Obi for switching parties multiple times:
“In 1999, you were in the party. In 2006, you were in another party. In 2014, you moved to another party. In 2019, you came back to another one. In 2025, you’re moving again—to rescue who?”
He ended with a jab at Obi’s supporters:
“Let’s tell ourselves the truth. Some of you are fighting for somebody you don’t even know.”
The video has gone viral, sparking intense criticism, particularly over Wike’s choice of venue—the altar of a church—for delivering political statements. Many users condemned the clergy for allowing the minister to use the pulpit for political commentary.
