Veteran Nollywood actor Adewale Elesho Adeoye, popularly known as Baba Elesho, has sparked widespread conversation online after sharing a deeply personal story about his household dynamics and declaring his wife as the true leader of his home.
Speaking in a recent interview, the revered Yoruba actor opened up about a pivotal family event involving his elderly mother and his wife, shedding light on the mutual respect that governs his marriage.
A Mother’s Cry for Help
According to Baba Elesho, his aging mother had been battling a long-standing eye condition and was residing with one of his younger siblings. Although he regularly provided financial support and checked on her well-being, he was unaware of how unhappy she had become in her living situation until a recent visit.
The actor recounted the emotional moment his mother poured out her heart to him. “The day I went to bring her from my younger sibling’s home, I had gone there to check on her and perform my duty as a son,” Baba Elesho shared. “My mum said she would rather be thrown into the sea than remain where she was because she wasn’t comfortable there.”
Deeply moved by his mother’s desperation, the actor made the immediate decision to rescue her from the situation and bring her to his own home in Lagos.
The Unconventional Protocol: Leaving Mom in the Car
Despite his urgency to help his mother, Baba Elesho took a highly deliberate step upon arriving at his Lagos residence. Instead of immediately bringing his mother inside, he left her waiting in the car and went upstairs to consult his wife first.
Detailing the encounter, the actor explained that he prostrated to his wife to explain the sudden development. “It was on Sunday. I went upstairs to meet my wife, prostrated, and told her I had a visitor. She asked who, and I replied, ‘Alhaja’ [his mother],” he stated.
While his wife naturally questioned why she wasn’t given prior notice, Baba Elesho explained the emergency nature of the situation and his mother’s distress. “She asked what happened and I explained everything. I told her that my mum said if there was nowhere else to take her, I should throw her into the sea, and that was why I brought her.”
Why the Wife’s Consent Matters
For Baba Elesho, seeking his wife’s permission before bringing his mother into their shared space was not a sign of weakness, but a demonstration of honor and respect for the woman who runs the household.
He emphasized that husbands must involve their wives in decisions that directly impact the domestic environment. “I came to speak with my wife first because she had to know about it. You own the home and your reactions matter,” the actor noted.
Rounding off his narrative, Baba Elesho challenged conventional patriarchal beliefs by asserting that true peace in a marriage is achieved through mutual respect and co-leadership, proudly stating that in his household, his wife takes the lead.
