Popular Nigerian social media personality Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has responded to allegations that his recent trip to China was harming the interests of Igbo traders.
The controversy began after businessman Tochukwu Harrison Mmaduboallor accused VDM of revealing confidential trade secrets that many Igbo businessmen in China depend on for their success.
VDM Clarifies the Purpose of His Visit
In response, VDM shared clips from his visit to several Chinese factories, explaining that his mission was to connect Nigerian consumers directly with manufacturers and promote business growth.
He insisted that he never mentioned any tribe in his videos and that his aim was to motivate Nigerians and Africans to explore global trade opportunities.
“Very selfish, it just made me see, do Nigerians really want Nigeria to grow? Because this is the same mentality wey never let us get light,” VDM said while addressing the criticism.
VDM further stated that his goal was not to hurt anyone’s business but to broaden people’s perspectives on trade.
“I am just opening eyes for people to do business. I don’t have plans to spoil anybody’s business; the sky is too big for everybody to fly,” he added.
The Backlash
Tochukwu had earlier argued that VDM’s content could jeopardize Igbo traders’ livelihoods, stressing that secrecy is a key part of business success.
“Business is all about secrecy. Real businessmen don’t introduce their suppliers to their customers,” he said in a viral video that fueled online debate.
Promoting Collaboration Over Competition
VDM maintained that his intention was to use his platform to create real-world business impact, helping people see new possibilities and overcome limiting beliefs.
In the caption accompanying his response video, he wrote:
“The problem of Nigeria is not only the government; as you can see, the mindset of the average man lacks togetherness.”
