A man simply identified as Umar Abdulaziz, has met his untimely end at the hands of four unidentified soldiers after he was tortured to death for allegedly stealing a neighbour’s phone in Ganaye Local Government area of Adamawa State.

According to reports, Fatima (the neighbour) had on Monday accused Abdulaziz of stealing her phone and reported him to one of the soldiers who happened to be her lover.

The soldier along with three of his colleagues came to the house and dragged Abdulaziz to one corner where he was reportedly given a beating of his life until he went into coma.

Concerned neighbours immediately reported the matter to a nearby Police Station after which policemen came and rush the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An eyewitness said, “The lady lived on the next street to mine. Our house is around the barracks in Ganaye. She had a disagreement with Abdulaziz and the next thing was for her to call her soldier lover to deal with the victim.

“She accused the man of stealing her mobile phone. She also said the man beat her up and told her lover to deliver her from his grasp. When the lover came, there were four soldiers in all. They dragged Abdulaziz out of the house and off to an unknown location.

“They did not even ask what happened. They used knives to injure Abdulaziz. The victim collapsed, the police were invited and they came to the house. I am not sure whether they arrested any of the soldiers.”

“It is wrong for soldiers to harass civilians and even to the point of death. The military and police authorities must investigate this matter and bring the soldiers to book,” he said.

A source told our correspondent that upon realizing that Abdulaziz was not going to make it in the hospital, the soldiers dragged him back to the entrance to his house, and left him for dead at the door.

“It was his siblings that later came and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” he added.
