A 300-Level medical student of the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, Edo State, and a mother of one, has committed suicide.
The deceased, identified as Ometere Aduga, reportedly hanged herself with the support of a stool and a noose tied to the ceiling fan in her family apartment for reasons yet to be ascertained.
Our correspondent gathered that the native of Igarra, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, whose husband lives outside the state, is said to be two-month pregnant.
Investigations revealed that the deceased had visited a private hospital in the town few weeks back where she was said to have told the hospital personnel of her desire to commit suicide because of her pregnancy.
She was, however, counseled against it and told to report back on Monday for medical examination and further advice.
Determined to take away her life, however, Aduga reportedly left her son with a neighbour, saying she wanted to take her bath.
The neighbour was said to have found her naked body dangling from the rope tied to the ceiling fan, when she went into the apartment to find out why she took so much time just to take her bath.
A source told our correspondent that the late student had a health challenge.
“Ometere was a very brilliant girl, who was a 300-Level medical student at the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, but she was advised to withdraw due to health reasons.
“She had some mental disorder. She later recovered and got married but her husband is not from here and she has been staying with her parents.
“One cannot really say what could have led to her committing suicide; whether it was as a result of her pregnancy or a relapse of her mental illness,” the source revealed.
Confirming the tragic incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Edo State Command, Noble Uwoh, said, “I am not aware that the lady was pregnant. But the matter is under investigation.
The Divisional Police Officer, Hilary Udoh, who also confirmed the incident, said, “Yes it is true. But the parents said it has happened and they have taken it in good faith. They are not suspecting any foul play.”
