Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections, has shed light on why foreign nations routinely deny visa applications from Nigerians, attributing the trend directly to the country’s ongoing economic struggles.

Addressing a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the former Governor of Anambra State likened global immigration dynamics to basic socioeconomic interactions. He argued that wealthy nations are naturally hesitant to open their borders to citizens from economically disadvantaged countries.

“No rich man will open their door for poor people, that’s why many countries are denying Nigerian visas,” Obi stated plainly during his address.

Economic Reform as a Shield Against Visa Restrictions

Obi expressed strong confidence that his administration’s proposed developmental reforms would fundamentally reshape Nigeria’s economic landscape, restoring the international prestige of the nation’s passport. He asserted that once the country undergoes comprehensive transformation, the desperate urge for citizens to emigrate will significantly decrease.

“By the time we are done reforming Nigeria, Nigerians won’t like to be travelling outside like now. Even when they apply for a visa, they can easily get it,” he added, stressing that domestic economic self-sufficiency is the ultimate key to global respect.

Political Realignment Ahead of 2027

The NDC candidate is gearing up for the 2027 presidential race alongside his running mate, the former Kano State Governor, Rabi’u Kwankwaso. The political duo has emerged as a major force under the NDC banner after a strategic realignment earlier this year.

Obi and Kwankwaso officially left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in May, citing unresolved internal divisions and persistent court cases that threatened their political vision. Their move to the NDC is seen by political analysts as an attempt to build a more cohesive coalition ahead of the next general elections.
