Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC) 2027 presidential candidate, has made a passionate plea to terrorists responsible for the abduction of numerous schoolchildren across Nigeria, urging their immediate and unconditional release. Obi’s call, disseminated via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, highlighted the profound anguish caused by the ongoing abductions and underscored the critical need for shared humanity.
Expressing deep shock and heartbreak, Obi specifically referenced distressing images of flagellated bodies of the abducted children, describing the situation as a grim testament to the pervasive insecurity plaguing the nation. He lamented, “I am deeply shocked and heartbroken by the condition in which these abducted school children are, as seen from their flagellated bodies. It is a painful reminder of the depth of insecurity in our land.”
A Warning from the Past, A Plea for the Future
The former Anambra State governor drew a poignant link between past societal failures and present-day crises, reiterating his long-held warning: “The society we abuse today will take its revenge on our children tomorrow.” He noted that many of the affected children were not yet born when he first articulated this caution, framing the current kidnappings as a stark illustration of how governance abuse can yield devastating, long-term consequences. Obi also extended this parallel to the national debt, cautioning that loans taken by today’s leaders would burden future generations with repayment and its repercussions.
An Appeal to Conscience and Humanity
In a direct address to the abductors, Obi appealed to their conscience, emphasizing the innocence of the children. “Remember that these are innocent children sons and daughters of people who have placed their hopes, dreams, and entire future in them. In every one of them, you will find reflections of your own children, your own family, and your own humanity,” he wrote.
Obi unequivocally stated that no grievance, hardship, or justification could ever overshadow the sanctity of a child’s life and innocence. He implored the kidnappers to consider remorse, embrace humanity, and have a change of heart, stressing that it is never too late for such a transformation.
“I therefore appeal to your sense of mercy: release these children immediately. Let them go. Return them safely to society to reunite with their families,” Obi concluded, reiterating the nation’s collective hope for the swift and safe return of the young victims to their families.
