One student died and six others were injured yesterday when a hostel collapsed in Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to an eye witness, the hostel collapsed when majority of the student-residents have gone to a building popularly known as New Lecture Hall to read in preparation for their forthcoming examinations.
The witness said that immediately the hostel collapsed at about 3:0am, panic-striken students began jumping from the twostory building, which led to the dead of the student.
The deceased, simply identified as Charles, was a 200 level student of French Department.
He was said to have died from the head injury he sustained from the incident.
The deceased’s body has, however, been deposited in the mortuary.
In a chat with National Mirror, some students disclosed that similar incidents occurred two years ago in the school, but no life was lost in both.
When the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ngozi Okiridu, was contacted, she refused to comment on the incident.
She said: “I will make a statement available to you people later.”
