The Nigerian entertainment landscape is in deep mourning following the passing of Alhaji Love Azeez Oladeji, a legendary Fuji musician widely recognized as the oldest active icon in the genre. He was 81 years old.

The revered singer reportedly passed away on Wednesday after a brief illness, leaving a massive void in the hearts of Fuji enthusiasts and music lovers across West Africa.

FUMAN Confirms the Passing of ‘Baba Wa’

The news of his demise was officially confirmed by Adekunle Abiodun, the General Secretary of the Fuji Musicians Association of Nigeria (FUMAN). Taking to social media, Abiodun expressed his profound grief and paid a glowing tribute to the late musical pioneer.

In a touching Facebook post, Abiodun referred to the deceased icon affectionately as “Baba wa” (Our Father), a title of deep respect reserved for highly esteemed elders in Yoruba culture. The association lamented the loss of an irreplaceable pillar who guided generations of artists within the Fuji subgenre.

Laid to Rest in Accordance with Islamic Rites

As a devout Muslim, the late icon’s final rites were conducted swiftly. In line with Islamic burial traditions, Alhaji Love Azeez Oladeji was laid to rest on Thursday, June 18, surrounded by family, close friends, and representatives from the music industry who came to pay their final respects.

His contributions to the evolution of Fuji music, bridging traditional Yoruba percussion with contemporary sounds, ensure that his rich musical legacy will live on for generations to come.
