Yassine Cheuko, the personal bodyguard of Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, has revealed that he can no longer provide the same level of protection for the footballer due to restrictions imposed by Major League Soccer (MLS).
Cheuko, a former Navy SEAL, has been part of Messi’s security team since the Argentine legend moved to the U.S. in 2023. Given Messi’s global status, it was deemed necessary for him to have dedicated security while playing in America.
Throughout his time in MLS, Cheuko became a familiar presence during matches, frequently intervening to stop pitch invaders attempting to get close to Messi. Many of these fans were intercepted before they could reach the superstar.
However, MLS has now placed limits on his role, confining his duties to off-field security. He is no longer permitted to step onto the pitch.
Speaking to House of Highlights, Cheuko confirmed the ban, stating, “They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore.”
He also highlighted the security challenges MLS faces with Messi’s presence, comparing it to his past experience in Europe. “I worked in Europe for seven years with Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people ever invaded the pitch. Since arriving in the U.S., in just 20 months, 16 people have already run onto the field. There’s a major issue here. I’m not the problem—let me help Messi.”
