Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, has expressed deep admiration for Lionel Messi, saying he has never seen a footballer play like him.
His remarks could stir debate among Argentine football fans, many of whom still regard Diego Maradona as the country’s all-time greatest player.
In a recent appearance on the Nuera podcast, President Milei praised the Inter Miami star, calling him an exceptional talent.
“I’ve never seen anyone play the way Messi does,” Milei said. “He is truly extraordinary. I’m a huge fan of Messi. Even back when local media heavily criticized him, I stood by him, saying he’s the greatest of all time.”
Years ago, Messi faced significant backlash for failing to bring international glory to Argentina, despite his achievements with Barcelona. Critics accused him of not performing at the same level for the national team.
Messi endured several disappointments, including a loss to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final and back-to-back Copa America defeats to Chile in 2015 and 2016. Following those setbacks, he briefly retired from international football in 2016 but later returned.
His perseverance paid off. In 2021, Messi led Argentina to a Copa America victory, followed by the Finalissima title, and then the crowning achievement—guiding Argentina to their third FIFA World Cup title in Qatar in 2022.
Most recently, he added another Copa America trophy to his collection in 2024.
