Team Nigeria has made history on the global stage, securing the prestigious Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China. This monumental victory marks an incredible milestone for the nation, which was making its debut appearance at the global academic tournament.
A Historic Global Debut
The Nigeria Spelling Bee organization officially announced the historic feat on Sunday. The young delegation represented not only Nigeria but also carried the expectations of the entire African continent during the high-stakes competition held in Shanghai.
Before jetting off to China, the organizers praised the students’ journey of determination, noting that they had successfully progressed from intense national qualifiers to the continental stage, and ultimately to the world finals.
Meet the Golden Team
The stellar four-member Nigerian team comprised outstanding young spellers from various schools across the country:
- Oluwadamilola Adeolu – St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti (2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Champion)
- Abdurrahman Yusuf – Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin
- Maryam Yusuf – Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin
- Chinedu Okediachi – Madonna International Schools, Asaba
Ar-Raheem International College in Ilorin celebrated the dual victory of its students, Maryam and Abdurrahman Yusuf, who both clinched individual medals at the world finals, solidifying their school’s academic reputation on an international level.
The Road to World Cup Victory
Nigeria’s path to the World Cup was earned through rigorous qualifiers. The team secured their spot after dominant displays at the Nigeria Spelling Bee and the subsequent African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe.
At the continental showdown, which featured competitors from over 30 African countries, Oluwadamilola Adeolu emerged as the overall Junior champion. Her teammate, Abdurrahman Yusuf, finished in an impressive third place, helping Team Nigeria claim the title of the second-best spelling nation in Africa. This strong momentum propelled the team to their golden finish in Shanghai.
Prior to the event, Adeolu had expressed immense enthusiasm about testing her skills against international peers, boosting her vocabulary, and bringing glory home. Her dream has now turned into reality, marking a proud new chapter of academic excellence for Nigerian youth.
