Lecturers across Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) are set to resume academic activities without delay. This development follows the official suspension of an industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at these three state-owned institutions.
The union confirmed the suspension on Friday in a joint statement. The statement was jointly signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH.
This crucial decision comes after extensive negotiations between the union and the Lagos State Government regarding improved staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding academic agreements. TVC News reported the suspension on Saturday.
In their statement, ASUU remarked, “Our struggle for improved staff welfare and the implementation of vital academic agreements has reached a significant milestone, largely due to the collective support of well-meaning individuals and organisations.” The immediate cessation of the strike is expected to bring considerable relief to thousands of students and their parents who have been impacted by the disruption of academic calendars at these tertiary institutions.
Appreciations and Ongoing Dialogue
ASUU extended its profound gratitude to various stakeholders for their support throughout the negotiation process. The union specifically acknowledged the vital contributions of the media, civil society organisations, traditional rulers, students, and parents.
Special recognition was given to the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern, and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights. ASUU lauded their advocacy efforts, describing them as highly supportive of the pursuit of quality public tertiary education. Furthermore, the lecturers commended traditional rulers for their timely interventions and praised students and parents for their remarkable patience and understanding during the period of industrial action.
While directing its members to return to classrooms immediately, the union unequivocally reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to academic excellence and the provision of quality university education. The statement emphasized, “As our members return to the classrooms with immediate effect, we reaffirm our commitment to academic excellence and quality university education.”
Despite the suspension of the strike, ASUU has indicated that it will continue its engagement with the Lagos State Government. These ongoing discussions aim to ensure the full and final resolution of all outstanding issues pertinent to its members’ welfare packages.
