Six people have been killed and eight injured after gunmen opened fire in a Quebec City mosque during evening prayers.
Two gunmen reportedly armed with AK-47 assault rifles and shouting ‘Allahu akbar!’ – ‘God is great’ in Arabic – fired on about 60 people inside the Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre.
According to witnesses interviewed on local television, two masked gunmen entered the cultural center at around 7:15 pm (0015 GMT) on Sunday.
The motive of the attack was not immediately clear, as police quickly set up in the mosque’s vicinity.
According to Police spokeswoman Christine Coulombe, those killed were between ages 35 and 70.
Quebec City Islamic Cultural Centre President Mohamed Yangui said the shooting happened in the men’s section of the mosque.
He said an estimated 60 to 100 people would have been there at the time of the shooting, adding: “We are sad for the families.”
