Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a strong critique against the administration of President Bola Tinubu following recent reported attacks on prominent opposition political figures in Nigeria.
In a public statement, Atiku condemned the violent incidents involving Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), and Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, the governorship candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State. He described the targeted assaults as deeply troubling events that threaten the country’s democratic foundations.
Allegations of Political Intimidation
Atiku directly linked the rising political hostility to loyalists of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He highlighted what he viewed as a glaring contradiction, noting that political violence was escalating at home while President Tinubu was out of the country on a spiritual pilgrimage.
According to the opposition leader, such actions reflect a growing slide toward state censorship. He raised further concerns regarding the unexplained disappearance of key social media influencers and critical commentators, labeling these developments as attempts to silence opposition voices by force.
Demands for Transparent Investigations Ahead of 2027
Addressing specific localized abuses, Atiku pointed out that a local security outfit in Sokoto State has reportedly been harassing residents simply for wearing ADC branded clothing. He emphasized that these acts of aggression signal desperation within the ruling party.
Calling on the federal government to protect opposition members and preserve democratic norms, Atiku urged authorities to conduct immediate, transparent investigations into the violence. He insisted that the government must guarantee a level playing field for all political parties as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, vowing that citizens will resist any attempt to suppress democratic contestation.
