French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to embark on a state visit to Nigeria this autumn, a move poised to significantly deepen the multifaceted diplomatic, economic, and security ties between Abuja and Paris. The announcement, made by French Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Marc Fonbaustier, during France’s National Day celebrations in Abuja on Tuesday, marks a pivotal moment in the expanding relationship between the two nations.

Ambassador Fonbaustier highlighted the upcoming visit as a major milestone, occurring two years after President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Paris. The high-level meeting between the two leaders will serve as a crucial platform to review progress made on their existing bilateral roadmap and to chart new, ambitious areas of collaboration designed to yield mutual benefits for the citizens of both countries.

A Partnership Rooted in Respect and Equality

Underscoring the foundation of this robust relationship, the French envoy emphasized that the partnership between Nigeria and France is built on principles of mutual respect and equality. He stressed that engagements between both nations are characterized by collaboration rather than interference or imposition, with both governments committed to fostering open dialogue, joint decision-making, and the pursuit of shared interests.

Driving Economic Growth and Commercial Exchange

The burgeoning economic dimension of the partnership was a key focus of the Ambassador’s address. He noted that Nigeria and France are actively collaborating to stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance living standards, all while prioritizing environmental protection and biodiversity. Recent commercial ventures were cited as evidence of strengthening economic bonds, including partnerships involving retail giants Carrefour and HyperCity, hospitality leader Accor with Shoreline, and Canal+’s significant acquisition of MultiChoice.

Furthermore, Fonbaustier lauded Nigerian businessman Abdul Samad Rabiu’s initiative to establish a “House of African Worlds” in Paris, describing it as a powerful symbol of the growing cultural and economic synergy between France and the African continent.

Advancing Governance and Social Development

Beyond economics, both nations share a deep commitment to good governance, the rule of law, freedom of expression, and equal opportunities. The French Embassy actively supports various programs aimed at empowering women, young people, and persons with disabilities across Nigeria, reinforcing shared values and contributing to social development.

Strengthening Agriculture and Food Security

Cooperation in the agricultural sector also remains a priority. The French Development Agency continues to implement projects focused on bolstering food security and improving agricultural value chains, particularly across northern Nigeria and the broader ECOWAS region, addressing critical developmental needs.

Joint Efforts in Regional Security and Counter-Terrorism

On the security front, Nigeria and France maintain close collaboration in the fight against terrorism and in promoting regional stability. Both countries are actively supporting initiatives to enhance the capacity of nations confronting extremist threats throughout West Africa, recognizing the shared challenge of insecurity in the region.

Macron’s Enduring Connection to Nigeria

A unique aspect highlighted by the Ambassador was President Macron’s personal history with Nigeria. More than two decades ago, as a student, Macron spent six months living in Nigeria. This formative experience, Fonbaustier revealed, significantly shaped the French President’s vision for Africa and continues to influence his diplomatic approach to the continent, underscoring a deeper understanding and appreciation for Nigeria’s pivotal role.

The upcoming visit underscores the strategic importance both Nigeria and France place on their relationship, promising a renewed impetus for cooperation across critical sectors and setting an ambitious agenda for the years ahead.
