Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, 2026, transformed into a powerful platform for widespread national discontent, as citizens across the country took to the streets to demand urgent government intervention. Leading the charge in Lagos was the outspoken rapper, activist, and legal professional, Folarin Falana, famously known as Falz The Bahd Guy. Joined by his distinguished father, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), Falz stood shoulder-to-shoulder with scores of Nigerians, protesting the nation’s spiraling insecurity and crippling economic hardship.

These nationwide demonstrations, meticulously organized by various civil society organizations and labour unions, erupted in direct response to an alarming surge in killings and kidnappings. The recent, harrowing abductions of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo state served as a painful, stark reminder of the pervasive fear and frustration gripping communities. Falz’s charismatic presence on the streets of Lagos injected a fresh wave of momentum into the protest, drawing significant attention to the urgent pleas for tangible change.

Addressing the impassioned crowd and engaged media, Falz delivered scathing criticism against what he vehemently described as government inaction and glaring indifference. With a sentiment echoing the iconic words, “They don’t care about us,” he lambasted authorities for allowing schools to remain open even as students face the terrifying, constant threat of abduction. He unequivocally labeled the situation as “intolerable,” highlighting the tragic irony of a nation struggling to protect its most vulnerable, yet expecting daily life to continue unaffected.

The award-winning Afro-pop musician didn’t mince words. He condemned rampant corruption and mismanagement, systematically listing states including Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, and Oyo where kidnappings and killings have tragically become a routine, horrifying occurrence. Falz drew a stark contrast between the sluggish, often non-existent, response to the plight of ordinary victims and the swift, decisive action reportedly seen in the release of relatives belonging to a former minister in Oyo state, underscoring a perceived double standard in the government’s priorities.

Falz’s powerful commentary extended to the political landscape, as he reflected on the ruling party’s prospects in upcoming general elections. When pressed about the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Falz asserted that the prevailing public mood indicated deep dissatisfaction with the current administration’s governance. He confidently predicted that Nigerian citizens, fueled by their mounting frustration, would ultimately express their grievances and demand accountability at the ballot box.

The protests were not confined to Lagos; they echoed across the nation. In the capital, Abuja, veteran activist Omoyele Sowore led another demonstration that tragically saw him collapse after police reportedly fired tear gas at the peaceful assembly. This incident further amplified the growing narrative of a government seemingly unresponsive to its citizens’ desperate pleas.

From the vibrant youth to seasoned activists, the message resonated loud and clear across the nation: Nigerians are weary of living in fear, burdened by economic hardship, and demand tangible solutions from their elected leaders. Falz’s powerful voice, echoing the sentiments of millions, serves as a potent rallying cry for urgent change and a testament to the indomitable spirit of Nigerian resilience.
