Pop superstar Ariana Grande has announced plans to retreat from the public eye once her current world tour concludes. The decision coincides with her departure from a highly anticipated West End theater production, following a wave of public speculation regarding her health and physical appearance.
Stepping Away From the Spotlight
According to a representative for the singer, Grande will take a step back from public-visibility roles after her 41-date ‘Eternal Sunshine Tour’ wraps up on September 1. In a statement shared with People, her spokesperson noted that the star is looking forward to completing her tour “on a high note, both healthily and happily,” before taking a well-deserved break.
The representative specifically cited the toll of “endless, ongoing public scrutiny” as a major factor behind the hiatus. While a source close to the singer insisted she remains healthy and successfully performs at a high level night after night, the public discourse around her physical state has clearly accelerated her desire for privacy.
Departure from West End Musical
As a result of her decision to step back, Grande has officially withdrawn from her next major career project: a West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s iconic musical Sunday in the Park with George. She was scheduled to star in the production alongside her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey in London next summer.
A spokesperson for the show’s production company confirmed her departure, telling the BBC: “We know this cannot have been an easy decision, and she makes it with our complete understanding and support.” The show’s opening had already been delayed twice to accommodate Grande’s demanding concert schedule.
A History of Public Scrutiny
The latest wave of concern erupted following the July 31 release of Grande’s music video for ‘Petal,’ the title track of her new studio album. Social media platforms were quickly flooded with tens of thousands of comments from fans and fellow celebrities expressing worry over her visibly lean frame.
Grande has long been open about the pressures of public perception. In 2023, she urged fans to be gentler when commenting on others’ bodies, revealing that what the public perceived as her “healthiest” era was actually her most difficult period, during which she was battling depression and unhealthy lifestyle habits. “[I was] at the lowest point of my life when I looked the way you consider my healthy, but that in fact wasn’t my healthy,” she previously shared.
