A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Farouk Aliyu, has ignited fresh discussions surrounding the contentious Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, asserting that Christian communities are now significantly more at ease with the arrangement than they were before the pivotal 2023 general election.
Speaking passionately during his appearance on Arise Television’s The Morning Show, Aliyu robustly defended the current administration, claiming it has effectively assuaged the initial widespread anxieties concerning potential religious marginalisation. His remarks come amidst ongoing political calculations and discussions about the party’s strategic direction.
Dispelling Fears: A Shift in Perception?
Aliyu’s core argument rests on the premise that the fears which gripped a segment of the Nigerian populace, particularly Christians, following the announcement of the Bola Tinubu/Kashim Shettima ticket in 2023, have since dissipated. He contends that the actions and policies of the current government have demonstrated a commitment to inclusivity, thereby building confidence across religious divides.
“Our leader, the President, decided in his wisdom not to change the winning ticket. And the Christians in this country, I am sure, are now comfortable, much, much more comfortable than when we came up with the Muslim-Muslim ticket,” Aliyu stated emphatically, hinting at the party’s resolve to maintain the ticket for the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
Recall of 2023 Controversy
It is no secret that the APC’s decision in 2023 to field two Muslim candidates for the nation’s highest offices sparked a torrent of criticism and apprehension. Religious leaders, civil society organisations, and political commentators voiced profound concerns that such a ticket could sideline Christians and exacerbate religious tensions within the country.
However, Aliyu reflected on that tumultuous period with a sense of vindication. “That was when there was a lot of hue and cry that the Christians were going to be marginalised. Well, now it’s history that nobody is being marginalised along religious lines,” he declared. He further underscored that President Tinubu has governed strictly as a Nigerian leader, devoid of any religious agenda, thereby fostering a sense of national unity rather than division.
Looking Ahead: The 2027 Outlook
The chieftain’s statements also serve as a strong indicator of the APC’s potential strategy for the 2027 presidential race. By defending the retention of Vice President Kashim Shettima as the running mate, Aliyu suggests that the party believes it has not only won over the electorate but also effectively addressed the religious concerns that initially threatened to undermine its appeal. The assertion that the APC has already “earned the confidence of Nigerians” in the previous election cycle underpins this forward-looking perspective, aiming to solidify public perception of a government that transcends religious bias.
