Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has offered a clear distinction regarding his financial status, asserting that while he qualifies as a billionaire when measured in Nigerian Naira, he does not meet the threshold for a US-dollar billionaire.
The clarification emerged during a recent interview where Obi was directly asked, “Are you a billionaire or are you not a billionaire?” His response was unequivocal: “Yes, I’m a billionaire in Naira. But not in dollars. You know they usually measure billionaires in dollars. But in Naira, yes. Capital yes.”
Obi’s statement highlights the significant difference in wealth valuation depending on the currency of denomination. It suggests that his substantial assets and investments firmly position him within the billionaire class when calculated in the local Nigerian currency, but fall short of the internationally recognized benchmark of a US-dollar billionaire.
This disclosure comes amid continuous public scrutiny and discussion surrounding Obi’s wealth, his background in business, and his financial standing both prior to and during his years in public service. His financial transparency and claims of frugal living have often been central to these public conversations.
The straightforward admission has resonated widely, prompting various reactions across social media platforms and among the populace, reflecting ongoing interest in the financial affairs of political leaders.
Obi’s comments provide direct insight into how he personally categorizes his wealth, further fueling the ongoing dialogue about transparency and financial disclosure among Nigeria’s public figures.
