The NOI Polls, on Tuesday, released the results of polls carried out on President Goodluck Jonathan’s performance at his job, his administration’s performance and Nigeria’s power situation between August 26 and August 28, 2013.
According to the polls, 57 percent of the Nigerians, who participated approved of Jonathan’s performance in August 2013. These results marked a 4 percent increase in approval rates for the president, and the highest since January, as similar polls conducted in July, placed his performance level at 53 percent.
Participants in the poll were asked three questions.
The first was, “Do you approve or disapprove of the performance of President Jonathan in the past one month?”
14% strongly approved, 43% approved, 19% disapproved, 4% strongly disapproved and 24% were neutral about his performance in the month of August.
From the geo-political zones, participants from the South-East zone had the highest number of approvals at 76%, followed by the North-Central zone with 70% and the South-South zone with 66%.
The North-West zone recorded the highest disapproval rate at 31% followed by the North-East zone with 26%. The South-West zone recorded the highest number of neutral respondents at 33%.
The report also showed that “more female (60%) than male (54%) respondents approved of the President’s job performance.
The second question in the polls was “How would you rate the performance of this current administration in the past one month?”
42% rated their performance average, 35% rated it well, with 8% voting ‘very well’ while the remaining 27% simply voted that they performed well.
23% rated their performance poor: 4% said they performed very poorly and 18% “poorly.”
From the geo-political zones, 54% of the participants from the South-South rated the administration’s performance average, 49% from the South-East rated their performance as positive and 34% from the North-East rated their performance negatively.
The third question, “How would you describe power in your area in the past one month?”
36% of Nigerians experienced an improvement in the power situation over the past month, where 5% experienced very much improvement and 31% experienced very little improvement. In addition, 27% of the respondents were of the opinion that “it remains bad.”
22% indicated that ‘there’s no difference at all’, while 16% of the respondents said that the power situation ‘is very bad and has gone worse.’
“An analysis based on geo-political zones showed that majority of the respondents that experienced an improvement in the power situation in August were from the South-South zone (53%). The North-Central zones, with 29%, represents that highest number of respondents that say ‘there’s no difference at all’ in the power situation over the past month.
“In addition, the North-East zone accounted for the highest proportion of respondents (42%) that indicated power supply in their area ‘remains bad’ while the Sout-West zone (26%) accounted for the most number of respondents that say ‘it’s very bad, has gone worse’.”
The reports also stated that although ratings on the performance of the administration were average and ratings on improved power supply decreased, the increase in Jonathan’s performance ratings suggested that he was doing well in other important areas affecting the nation’s economy.
It listed the heightened security reports and improvements in the transport sector as possible influences on how the participants voted.
