The uncertainty in the Nigeria education sector is forcing parents to send their children abroad for study.
Mr. Obioma Ogukwe, a staff of The Sun Newspaper wanted uninterrupted education for his children so he took three of them to Ghana for studies.
Though his intention was noble, unfortunately, Mr. Ogukwe is regretting sending his son to the Ideal College in Tema, Ghana.
15-year-old Austine Ogukwe had resumed at the college on October 1 but 14 days later, his mangled corpse was found at the ocean bank.
Austine’s death has been a mystery as the school claimed he drowned when he and other children were led out of the school by an unnamed teacher for their weekly exercises.
The school claimed Austine wandered from sight but was found dead hours after purportedly drowning.
Austine’s parents are not convinced that he drowned as the school claims. Mr. Ogukwe has since called for a thorough investigation into the death.
“Three of my children are schooling in Ghana. I was called to come over to the school and I took a flight from Nigeria. When I got
there, I was told my son drowned. I was shocked and asked how it happened. They told me their teacher took him and other students for exercises but few hours later, nobody could find my son. They said they looked everywhere for him but later found his clothes on the sand close to the ocean. A search party that same day later found his corpse near the ocean. His face was brutalised, there were two sharp cuts on his side close to his rib. My son was gruesomely murdered and dumped where they found him because there were no blood stains where the corpse was found.”
Mr. Ogukwe said he has since petitioned the Nigeria embassy in Ghana as he alleged his son was killed by suspected ritualists.
“This cannot be drowning, the corpse was seen that same day. Also, his body was badly injured and it seems blood was taken from him. I learnt indigenes do not go to that area where the ocean is on the day they took my son and others there so why did they take them there? I am suspecting foul play as the death is a mystery to me and I want a thorough investigation. I want to find out what killed my son,” he said.
