A horrific incident unfolded at the Filmhouse IMAX Cinema in the upscale Lekki area of Lagos State on Friday night, August 29, leaving two people dead following a violent confrontation with an armed intruder.
Violent Confrontation at Cinema Entrance
According to eyewitness accounts, a man armed with a machete and a knife attempted to force his way into the cinema premises. Onlookers reported that the assailant appeared to be highly intoxicated or under the influence of substances. When vigilant security personnel stationed at the entrance intercepted him to prevent entry, a violent scuffle ensued.
Fatal Stabbing and Subsequent Mob Action
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed the tragic details of the encounter. The assailant, described as appearing destitute, allegedly stabbed one of the security guards to death and inflicted severe injuries on another guard who attempted to intervene.
The violent attack sparked outrage among onlookers and bystanders at the scene. In the ensuing chaos, an angry mob descended on the armed attacker, beating him severely. The assailant ultimately succumbed to the injuries sustained during the mob action.
Police Detention and CCTV Review
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the police have detained the cinema’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) for questioning. Authorities are actively working to secure and analyze closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the cinema premises. This footage is expected to provide critical insights into the sequence of events and help identify other individuals who may have participated in the mob violence.
A full-scale investigation has been launched by the Lagos State Police Command to unravel the circumstances surrounding the security breach and the subsequent double fatality.
