A national newspaper quoting competent sources says Senate President , Bukola Saraki has sent emissaries to beg a national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.
Saraki angered President Muhammadu Buhari, Tinubu and other top members of the national working committee of the APC after he contested and won the Senate President election against their wish.
The APC and its leaders believe Saraki should not have contested for the position since the party already had its own preferred candidate, Senator Ahmed Lawan.
Since the Senate leadership election on June 9 Saraki and his supporters have been viewed as rebels.
Days after the election was won by Saraki and lost by the APC, and as the crisis grew into an open ego tussle between Saraki and his party, the new Senate President reached out the president and even visited former president Olusengun Obasnajo to intervene.
All overtures to Buhari by Saraki has been rebuffed, while the vibe from the Senate President’s camp had always been that they were not ready to mend fences with Tinubu.
However, The Punch says ‘sources’ told their ‘correspondent that Saraki, of recent, had made strenuous efforts to meet and appeal to Tinubu to sheathe his sword.’
‘Saraki’s olive branch to Tinubu may mark a turning point in the crisis as the Senate President, before now, had insisted that he would not ‘beg’ the APC leader, ‘the source told the newspaper.
However, the President, Tinubu and the APC leadership still reportedly maintain their stance that the leadership of the senate should tow the party line.
