Nigerian artists Wizkid and Ayra Starr are facing criticism following the release of their new collaboration, “Gimme Dat,” which has sparked controversy over its lyrics. The backlash centers around the repeated mention of the name “Diallo” in the chorus, with many believing it references Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old Guinean immigrant fatally shot by New York police in 1999.
The official music video’s release intensified the conversation, especially after Ayra Starr promoted it on social media. Critics, including one user whose tweet gained over 2.5 million views, accused the duo of being insensitive and dishonoring Diallo’s memory by using his name in a romantic context.
However, some fans defended the song. One noted that it samples Wyclef Jean’s “911” featuring Mary J. Blige — a love song — and argued that the usage of “Diallo” in Ayra’s track does not directly reference Amadou Diallo. Still, others maintained that the name carries a painful legacy that shouldn’t be casually used.
The song continues to divide opinion, with many awaiting possible clarification or response from the artists involved.
