Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly addressed persistent speculation regarding his political future, unequivocally stating that he never pledged to President Bola Tinubu that he would defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Wike clarified that his sole commitment to the President was to support his re-election bid.

Setting the Record Straight on Arise TV

Speaking during an incisive interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time show, the former Rivers State Governor provided a definitive account of his understanding with President Tinubu. Wike’s remarks come amidst ongoing discussions about his alignment, especially given his high-profile ministerial role within the current administration despite his long-standing membership in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I told them I would support the President right from the start,” Wike recounted, emphasizing the specific nature of his commitment. He asserted that this support was focused on President Tinubu’s ambition for a second term, distinct from any promise to switch political parties.

A Firm Denial and Pointed Critique

Challenging any narrative suggesting otherwise, Wike directly stated, “I never told Mr. President I will join APC. Go and ask him.” He further expressed his independence from external pressures regarding his party affiliation, adding, “If I want to join APC, it’s not people like Hope who will tell me to join APC.”

In a remark that underscored his characteristic bluntness and critical viewpoint, Wike added, “In fact, he is lucky I’m not in APC because I wouldn’t put up with that kind of nonsense he’s doing in APC.” This comment, without naming specific individuals, highlights Wike’s firm stance and his readiness to critique practices within the APC, even while serving in a federal capacity under an APC president.

Wike’s Continued Influence in Nigeria’s Political Landscape

Wike’s clarification provides insight into his intricate political maneuvering, particularly after his pivotal role in the 2023 general elections where he, along with other ‘G-5’ governors, withheld support from the PDP’s presidential candidate. His statements underscore his strategy to support President Tinubu’s administration and re-election without necessarily abandoning his primary party identity or compromising his critical perspective on political governance.
