Nigeria’s most prestigious music awards show, the Headies, is packing its bags once again. The organizers have officially announced that the 18th Headies Awards will be held in Toronto, Canada, marking another major international leap for the celebration of Afrobeats and African music culture.
An Economic Reality Check
Speaking at ‘The Big Announcement’ event held at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun candidly addressed the decision to move the awards. He explained that hosting the event in Canada was a highly economical decision necessary to keep the platform sustainable and fully funded.
Responding to critics who questioned the move abroad, Animashaun defended the strategic shift. ‘Someone said Ayo, you are taking the Headies out of the country again, it does not make sense. Tell me what makes sense,’ he stated. ‘Does it make sense for us not to do it anymore? So how do we fund it?’
A Hybrid Celebration: Lagos Meets Toronto
Recognizing the deep connection the awards have with their home audience, the organizers are not leaving Nigerian fans behind. While the main stage and physical award presentations will light up Toronto, the 18th Headies will run simultaneously with an official, high-energy live watch party in Lagos.
This hybrid format ensures that local fans can gather, celebrate, and witness key moments of the live broadcast and award presentations in real-time, bridging the gap between the two continents.
The Headies’ Expanding Global Footprint
This is not the first time the prestigious awards show has crossed international borders. The Headies first departed Nigerian shores in 2022, heading to Atlanta, Georgia, for its 15th edition. Although the ceremony made a triumphant return to Lagos for the 17th edition in 2025, this latest move to Canada underscores the organizers’ commitment to pushing Afrobeats further into the global spotlight while navigating modern economic realities.
