The World Health Organisation (WHO), has declared its willingness to go all the way with the federal government to re-establish the Country’s botched victory. It stated this after the sudden re-emergence of Polio in the country.

Nigeria was waiting to be declared Polio free after successfully keeping the disease at bay for the past two years, but unfortunately suffers a set back after the reemergence of the disease in the North East.

According to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Health, it said that the director general, WHO, Margaret Chan made the disclosure to support Nigeria at the 66th session of the WHO Regional Committee  for Africa at Addis Ababa.

“The setback in no way undermines the tremendous job done by the Nigerian government, in getting down to zero case. You will get there again. We will get the job done, WHO will offer the necessary support to Nigeria in putting an end to Polio,” she said.

Also, the world’s health, Regional Director, Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti noted that the re-emergence outbreak of the disease  calls for more vigilance in the region.

She commended Nigeria for its quick response to arrest the situation, adding that if other countries could rise up to occasions same way Nigeria did, ‘‘challenges will be eliminated before they blow out of proportion.’’

“Although, Africa faces multiple and complex diseases, outbreaks, timely detection and improved emergency response will help in tackling the challenge,” she added.
