In a sudden change of plans, Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to lead the Nigerian delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This development follows a decision by President Bola Tinubu to cancel his scheduled travel to the high-level global gathering.

Vice President Shettima is scheduled to depart from Abuja on Sunday to represent the nation at the annual meeting of world leaders. Meanwhile, President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria on the same day, concluding a three-week stay in Europe.

An Unexpected Shift in Presidential Plans

The cancellation marks a significant departure from the Federal Government’s prior preparations. As recently as July, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, had confirmed President Tinubu’s attendance following a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

President Tinubu was initially expected to use the global platform to highlight his administration’s ongoing economic reforms and engage with international partners on critical sectors, including energy, education, and healthcare. A provisional schedule had also slated the President to deliver an address during the high-level General Debate.

However, sources close to the Presidency confirmed on Friday that President Tinubu would no longer travel to New York for the summit. No official reason has been provided for this sudden itinerary change.

Shettima Stepping into the Global Spotlight Again

With the President’s absence, Vice President Shettima will once again take the helm of Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in New York. Shettima has represented President Tinubu at previous sessions of the assembly, leading the delegation and delivering national statements during the 79th and 80th sessions respectively.

The 81st session of the UN General Assembly officially commenced on September 8, with the highly anticipated high-level week running from September 22 to 28 at the UN Headquarters in New York. This year’s general debate centers around the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
