Nigerian artist Anthony Ebuka Victor, widely known as Victony, has shared how a life-altering car accident helped shift his parents’ attitude toward his music career.
In April 2021, Victony was involved in a devastating accident that claimed one life and left three others injured. Speaking on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the Soweto singer revealed that his parents had initially been hesitant about his decision to pursue music. They had hoped he would complete his education and become an engineer.
However, their view changed dramatically after the accident. The overwhelming outpouring of support Victony received from the public made his parents realize how significant music was to him.
“My parents weren’t exactly against me making music, but they didn’t fully support it either,” he said. “They wanted me to finish school and go into engineering. But after the accident in 2021 and seeing the love I got online—people saying ‘pray for Victony’—they understood how important music was to me and finally gave me their blessing.”
Victony rose to fame following his hit collaboration with Mayorkun on Holy Father and is signed to Mainland Block Party, a label founded by Nigerian music executive Tobi Mohammed.
Reflecting on the experience, Victony described the accident in 2023 as a “blessing in disguise.” He also opened up about the health struggles he faced in its aftermath, revealing he has undergone four surgeries since the incident.
