The Nigerian media landscape is mourning the loss of Revd Mobolade Omonijo, a distinguished veteran journalist and influential member of The Nation Newspaper’s Editorial Board. He passed away on October 15, 2026, at the age of 63, following a brief illness. The news was confirmed by both The Diocese of Lagos West and The Nation, sending ripples of sorrow across professional and spiritual communities.

The Diocese of Lagos West, in a release shared with PUNCH Online on Monday, announced Revd Omonijo’s death, remembering him as a devoted member of its Media and Publicity Department. He served as the Vicar of the Church of Pentecost, Dopemu, Lagos, balancing his spiritual duties with a profound four-decade-long career in journalism.

A Legacy of Thorough Journalism

Revd Omonijo’s journey in journalism was marked by dedication and excellence. A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, his impressive career included stints at reputable media organizations such as The Economist and Vanguard before he joined The Nation in 2008. There, he rose to become the newspaper’s Group Political Editor, a role where his analytical prowess and deep understanding of Nigeria’s political landscape shone brightly.

Sam Omatseye, Chairman of The Nation Editorial Board, expressed profound grief over Omonijo’s passing, describing the loss as “difficult to comprehend” and “impossible to wrap one’s mind around.” Omatseye lauded Revd Omonijo’s professionalism and significant contributions, recalling him as a journalist who was “thorough and unsparing in rigour.”

Tributes to a Man of Integrity

The Diocese of Lagos West painted a picture of Revd Omonijo as “very meek, lovely, conscientious, articulate, assiduous, and meticulous,” highlighting his “remarkable verbal dexterity.” These qualities resonated deeply in his professional life, earning him respect from colleagues and readers alike.

Omatseye further illuminated Revd Omonijo’s character, describing him as someone who was “at once sober and full of life’s humour.” He also noted Omonijo’s piety, which predated his ordination as a reverend. Despite recent health challenges that led to him stepping down as political editor, Omatseye affirmed his standing as “one of the best” in the field.

Revd Omonijo was known for bringing a critical and balanced perspective to Editorial Board discussions, often striving to cut through partisan positions to maintain journalistic integrity. Poignantly, Omatseye recalled that Revd Omonijo attended an Editorial Board meeting just the week before his demise, where he was assigned two editorial topics to write, a testament to his unwavering commitment until the very end. “We shall never forget you, Reverend,” Omatseye concluded.

The family will announce details regarding the funeral arrangements in due course. The Diocese statement concluded by urging the public to remember Revd Omonijo’s children and family in their prayers: “May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace, and rise in glory. Amen.”
