Social media activist and critic, VeryDarkMan (VDM), has offered the public a preview of commissioned mural artworks at the newly constructed Odiokwu Community Secondary School in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State. The unveiling, ahead of the school’s official commissioning, has generated significant buzz online, sparking varied reactions.
VDM recently shared a video on his Instagram page, highlighting the extensive graffiti and mural artworks adorning the school compound. He disclosed that an impressive ₦50 million was allocated for these artworks, which prominently feature Afrobeats sensation Burna Boy, alongside VDM himself, a whistleblower identified as Winnie, and other members of the project team.
Unveiling the N50 Million Artworks
The Odiokwu Community Secondary School, located in Burna Boy’s hometown, represents a substantial community development project reported to be worth a total of ₦250 million. Construction of the facilities was handled by Fego Works Limited, with VDM overseeing the initiative.
In the shared video, VDM eloquently explained the rationale behind featuring Burna Boy’s image so prominently across the school. He emphasized that the intention is for the children attending the school to grow up knowing that a Grammy Award winner emerged from their very own community, thereby instilling in them the belief that they too can achieve extraordinary feats.
The vibrant artworks aim to serve as a constant source of inspiration for students, connecting them directly to a global icon who shares their roots.
A Vision for Inspiration and Community Development
Beyond the artistic display, the commissioning day activities are set to include a spirited football match between teams from Ahoada West and Ahoada East, further fostering community engagement and healthy competition. This multi-faceted approach underscores a broader commitment to youth development and community upliftment in the region.
Mixed Reactions Surface Online
Following the revelation, the project quickly became a talking point across social media platforms. Reactions have been notably split, with many expressing admiration for Burna Boy’s perceived philanthropy and the commendable effort to uplift his community. However, others have voiced skepticism regarding certain aspects of the project’s rollout and financial decisions, particularly the substantial sum allocated to the murals.
The debate highlights the diverse perspectives often associated with large-scale community initiatives, especially those involving prominent public figures and significant financial investments.
