Prominent Nigerian social commentator Martins Otse, widely known as Verydarkman (VDM), has sounded a critical alarm over what he perceives as a coordinated effort to drive an extremist agenda in Nigeria. His concerns follow the chilling abduction of 45 schoolchildren and seven teachers in Oyo State, an incident that has thrown the nation into a state of anxiety.

Reports confirm that during the tragic raid, one teacher was killed on-site, while another lost their life in captivity. However, it is the kidnappers’ unprecedented demands that have sparked intense national debate, prompting VDM to dissect the underlying motives behind the crime.

The Shocking Demands: Money as a Decoy?

According to reports, the Oyo State kidnappers have demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion to be deposited into an account in the Benin Republic, along with two Hilux vehicles. More alarmingly, they have demanded the immediate release of terrorists currently held in Agodi and Abolongo prisons, alongside an amendment to Oyo State’s legal framework to enforce Sharia law.

In a newly released video, Verydarkman argued that the heavy financial demand is merely a smokescreen. According to him, the real prize for the insurgents lies in the ideological demands specifically, the liberation of their detained comrades and the forced implementation of Sharia law in a southern state like Oyo.

A Calculated Attack on Western Education

Connecting the dots between recent security crises, VDM highlighted a worrying trend of school-targeted kidnappings across Nigeria between 2024 and 2026. By his calculations, at least 753 students and educators have been abducted during this period.

He argued that these continuous raids on academic institutions are not random acts of criminality but are deeply rooted in the ideological doctrine of Boko Haram, a group whose name literally translates to ‘Western education is a sin.’ By targeting schools, the insurgents aim to paralyze the educational system and instill fear in the populace.

Historical Parallels and the Stance of Nigerian Muslims

VDM went on to draw historical parallels, referencing Usman Dan Fodio’s 19th-century campaign to spread Islamic rule across the region. He suggested that modern-day insurgents might view themselves as continuing this historical expansionism. However, the commentator was quick to defend the broader Muslim community in Nigeria.

He emphasized that this extremist agenda is not a reflection of mainstream Islam, asserting that the vast majority of Nigerian Muslims reject such radical ideologies. VDM warned that if left unchecked, the actions of these insurgents would harm not just Christians, but also peaceful Muslims who refuse to conform to strict, extremist doctrines.

As security agencies face intense pressure to rescue the remaining hostages safely, VDM’s analysis has reignited critical conversations surrounding national security, ideological warfare, and the urgent need to protect vulnerable schools across the federation.
