The United States Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has revealed that the Department of War is getting ready for potential military involvement in Nigeria following reports of attacks on Christians.
Hegseth made the announcement on Saturday through a post on X, responding to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning about a possible intervention over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
We’re ready for action in Nigeria Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth tells Trump
In his message, he stated:
“Yes sir. The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria — and anywhere — must end immediately. The Department of War is preparing for action. Either the Nigerian Government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
Trump labels Nigeria CPC
A day earlier, Trump had categorized Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing continuous attacks on Christians and claiming the government had failed to protect religious minorities.
The Nigerian government has, however, dismissed accusations of persecution, maintaining that no religious group is being singled out for attack.
US troops to move into Nigeria?
Reports indicate that Trump is considering “taking decisive steps” in Nigeria, suggesting an increase in U.S. presence in the country to help “restore order and protect religious freedom.”
He allegedly warned that if the Nigerian authorities do not act quickly to end the violence, his administration would intervene, stressing that “America will always stand with the persecuted.”
