The United States Mission in Nigeria has commended Nigerian-American physician and entrepreneur, Dr. Ikenna Okezie, for his outstanding contributions to transforming kidney care and expanding access to high-quality healthcare across the US.
In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the mission highlighted Dr. Okezie’s leadership as the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Somatus, a pioneering healthcare company that delivers in-home dialysis support for patients battling chronic kidney disease.
Transforming Kidney Treatment Through Innovation
Co-founded by Dr. Okezie and Anthony Welters, Somatus has grown into a major force in specialized healthcare management, currently valued at approximately $2.5 billion. The company operates on a value-based care model, partnering closely with nephrology, cardiology, primary care groups, and health systems to offer comprehensive, integrated care for individuals with or at risk of kidney disease and congestive heart failure.
The US Mission noted that Dr. Okezie’s visionary leadership is helping to reshape healthcare delivery, dramatically improving patient outcomes and quality of life across the United States.
A Legacy of Academic and Professional Excellence
Dr. Okezie’s path to medicine was influenced early on. Born in Nigeria, he relocated to the United States at two years old and was raised in Detroit. Growing up in a family of medical professionals—including his father and older brother—he developed a passion for healthcare from a young age.

He served as Group Vice President at DaVita Inc., overseeing a $1 billion business division with over 4,000 employees and 600 contracted nephrologists in the Mid-Atlantic region. Additionally, he worked as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company and as a Managing Director at the Advisory Board Company.
