The United States government will tightly monitor the execution and results of Nigeria’s upcoming 2027 general elections, according to U.S. Congressman Riley Moore. The lawmaker indicated that President Donald Trump’s administration intends to keep a watchful eye on West Africa’s largest democracy to ensure electoral integrity.

Speaking in an interview with NoireTV, Moore explained that Washington is deeply invested in the democratic trajectory of Nigeria. When questioned about the U.S. government’s role in ensuring a credible election, Moore asserted that both he and the administration would be paying very close attention to how the transition unfolds.

Legislative Pressure and Security Assistance Restrictions

Moore’s comments coincide with escalating legislative actions in Washington targeting Nigeria’s domestic policies. The congressman, who previously participated in a U.S. fact-finding mission to investigate the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, revealed that significant policy shifts are underway.

He is currently co-sponsoring a bill drafted by Representative Chris Smith designed to restrict security aid to Nigeria unless specific human rights benchmarks are met. Furthermore, Moore highlighted critical provisions he introduced into a newly debated appropriations bill.

A Shifting U.S.-Nigeria Relationship

According to Moore, the appropriations bill contains binding language that directly links U.S. military and security funding to Nigeria’s efforts in combating religious persecution and protecting vulnerable communities.

“There is a lot of language that I put on that bill that relates to Nigeria and the persecution of Christians and restrictions on security assistance,” Moore said, noting that the legislation is highly likely to become law. “There are some pretty strong and aggressive measures in that bill that are going to be binding as it relates to our relationship to Nigeria moving forward.”

These developments suggest that diplomatic relations between Abuja and Washington during the Trump administration may become increasingly conditional, with U.S. defense support tied closely to democratic reforms, religious freedom, and the credibility of the 2027 polls.
