Several University of Benin (UNIBEN) students have been reported trapped after a storey building collapsed in Benin City, Edo State.

According to Sahara Reporters, the incident occurred on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, a popular area known for housing students. The building collapsed on Saturday morning following a heavy downpour.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with teams working to extract those trapped in the rubble.

As shooting breaks out in UNIBEN, a 500-level student is shot dead and several are injured.

A student, speaking anonymously, revealed that a university rescue team had successfully rescued some of the trapped occupants, though many sustained serious injuries. The injured victims were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

“The rescue team is still searching for one victim who remains trapped inside the rubble. It was reported that the victim called from inside the building, pleading for help, and efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue them,” the student said.

The Dean of Students from UNIBEN is reportedly on-site, directing rescue efforts alongside the university team.

As of the time of reporting, the university administration has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the collapse or the exact number of people affected.
