A shocking act of violence has shattered the peaceful reputation of the French Riviera, leaving a prominent Ukrainian billionaire and his family fighting for their lives. Vadim Ermolaev, a well-known oligarch, was targeted alongside his wife and teenage son in a devastating shrapnel bomb explosion in Monaco.
A Targeted Strike in the Heart of the Principality
The horrifying incident unfolded at approximately 10:00 PM on Monday, June 29, outside the entrance of the Cuomo Foundation, a local philanthropic organization. Investigators believe the family was specifically targeted as they walked near the building’s entrance. The explosive device, packed with nuts, bolts, and metal shot designed to maximize physical damage, was hidden inside a backpack left at the scene.
Catastrophic Injuries Reported
The blast inflicted severe, life-altering injuries on the family. Witnesses described a gruesome scene in the immediate aftermath, reporting that Ermolaev’s wife, Anna, suffered catastrophic injuries resulting in the loss of both of her feet. She was found slumped over and covered in blood. The couple’s 13-year-old son, one of their four children, was also seriously injured. All three victims remain in critical condition at a local hospital.
Manhunt Launched for Suspect Caught on CCTV
Security footage from the area has provided law enforcement with vital clues. CCTV cameras captured a male suspect wearing a black hat, a tracksuit, white jeans, and trainers dropping off the bag shortly before the detonation. Following the explosion, the suspect was spotted fleeing on foot toward the French border town of Beausoleil. Monaco authorities, in coordination with French police, have launched an intensive manhunt to apprehend the fugitive.
An Unprecedented Event in Monaco’s History
While counter-terrorism agencies have not officially classified the bombing as a terrorist act, government officials have condemned the violence. Eric Ciotti, the Mayor of Nice, called the attack a profound tragedy and expressed his solidarity with the victims and the people of Monaco.
Minister of State Christophe Mirmand underscored the gravity of the situation, noting that this is likely the first time in the recorded history of the Principality that such an attack has occurred. Investigators are currently gathering evidence to determine the motive behind this targeted hit on the Ukrainian billionaire.
