U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints, to the “Trump Strait.” The suggestion, made amid escalating military tensions with Iran, marks the latest in a series of unorthodox geographical rebranding efforts by the administration.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump asserted that the waterway is now under American control. “Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote, adding that like the country itself, the route would be “hotter” than ever before. The White House subsequently amplified the message, sharing a social media graphic of a map where the strategic route was relabeled as the “Trump Strait.”
A Playful Suggestion or Serious Policy?
When questioned by reporters in the Oval Office shortly after the social media posts, President Trump appeared to downplay the seriousness of the proposal. Laughing off the queries, he remarked that he was “just throwing that out” as an idea.
This is not the first time the president has suggested renaming major geographic landmarks to reflect American influence or personal branding. His latest proposal follows a pattern of unilateral renaming efforts, including:
- Lake America: An executive order signed by Trump directing that Lake Ontario be renamed amid an escalating trade dispute with Canada.
- Gulf of America: A declaration upon returning to office in January 2025 renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
Neither Canada nor Mexico has recognized these unilateral geographic adjustments.
Military Escalation in the Middle East
While the renaming proposal was met with mixed reactions, the geopolitical reality in the region remains highly volatile. The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial international maritime corridor through which approximately 20 percent of the world’s crude oil transits daily.
President Trump confirmed that the U.S. military recently conducted heavy airstrikes targeting Iranian military installations near the waterway. According to Trump, the strikes successfully neutralized key Iranian assets, including defensive and offensive equipment, mine-dropping rockets, and newly restored radar and missile systems.
“It was a very heavy attack last night, and we’re prepared to do another one any time we want,” Trump told reporters, though he noted that the renewed military campaign against Iranian forces would not continue indefinitely.
