President Bola Tinubu has officially launched the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for the 2027 presidential election, using a spirited rally in Kaduna to shift blame for Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties onto his political adversaries. Addressing a vibrant assembly of supporters, Tinubu asserted that the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians is a direct consequence of previous administrations, not a product of his government’s policies, while simultaneously promising a prosperous future if he secures a second term.
Tinubu’s Stance on Economic Hardship
Speaking on Saturday, October 24, at the campaign flag-off event, President Tinubu directly challenged those who have made hunger and poverty central themes in their campaigns against him. "I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did!" he declared, firmly positioning the economic struggles as a legacy inherited from those who governed before his time, rather than an outcome of his own leadership. This bold assertion set the tone for his re-election pitch.
Promises to Youth and Opposition’s Rebuttal
President Tinubu also addressed younger Nigerians directly, framing his quest for a second term as an opportunity for generational advancement. "To you, the children of our country, it’s a promise of a second term – prosperity; you will not regret it," he assured the crowd, indicating that economic aspiration will be a core message of his campaign. However, this narrative has already drawn sharp responses from his principal challengers. Atiku Abubakar, running on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform, and Peter Obi of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have consistently highlighted the deteriorating living conditions and escalating costs for ordinary Nigerians as central to their bids to unseat the incumbent. Reports from earlier in October indicated that Atiku Abubakar had strongly criticized President Tinubu for attempting to blame the opposition for hunger, describing such claims as "delusional."
Early Start to a Fierce Contest
The Kaduna event signifies the formal commencement of what is widely expected to be a fiercely contested presidential race. The ruling APC is strategically moving early to consolidate its base and gain momentum ahead of the 2027 vote. Opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, have already urged registered voters to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), emphasizing their role as a peaceful instrument for demanding change in response to issues like pervasive hunger, widespread insecurity, and the rising cost of living.
