President Bola Tinubu has ordered the release of funds to settle pension arrears, implement salary increases, and address other outstanding benefits owed to retired military personnel.
This directive follows peaceful protests by military veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance earlier in the week, Naijalog reports.
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, confirmed the President’s swift response in a statement on Friday, applauding Tinubu’s prompt action. He commended the President for ensuring the timely disbursement of a three-month salary increase and authorizing payments to clear pension arrears and other entitlements for retired service members.
According to Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, military personnel have already begun receiving notifications about the approved salary increases.
Matawalle expressed gratitude to Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of both active and retired military personnel, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to resolving long-standing pension issues and improving their living conditions. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, for ensuring the funds were distributed effectively.
The Defence Minister encouraged members of the Nigerian military to remain steadfast in their duties, reassuring them of President Tinubu’s dedication to boosting morale and providing essential support to tackle insecurity nationwide.
“Despite initial challenges, rest assured that Mr. President is committed to uplifting our military forces as they confront the nation’s security challenges,” Matawalle stated.
He emphasized the critical role of the Nigerian military in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other criminal activities, reiterating the government’s focus on eliminating insecurity. Matawalle concluded by reaffirming the President’s unwavering support for the Armed Forces, promising to enhance their readiness and resilience in safeguarding the nation.
