The government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce a sustainable and reliable power supply for universities and teaching hospitals by allowing them to generate their own electricity. Ayo Adegboyega, the Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), stated this during an interview with reporters at the W.O. Lawal praying ground in Ibadan. The project is one of several initiatives being undertaken by the agency to address the long-standing problem of inconsistent power supply in the country. The REA is currently working on other projects such as the provision of mini-grids and solar panel power for households across Nigeria. In addition, the agency plans to unbundle the national grids and enable Federal universities and University Teaching Hospitals to generate their own power supply. This initiative is expected to be operational within the next few months. The University of Abuja will host the inauguration of one of these projects in the coming weeks, with other initiatives in the pipeline aimed at delivering uninterrupted power supply to Nigerians. It is important to investigate the root causes of power outages rather than addressing only the surface issues.
