The federal government has granted the Lagos state government approval for the proposed Lekki-Epe cargo and passenger airport.
When completed, the airport is expected to serve approximately five million passengers per year in the Lagos state axis of Lekki, Ajah, and Epe.
While officially handing over the approval letter for the airport development to Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday at the opening ceremony of the 2022 edition of the Lagos Economic Summit dubbed Ehingbeti in Victoria Island, Lagos, the Aviation minister, Hadi Abubakar Sirika, stated that the state is qualified to embark on the project due to Lagos’ cosmopolitan nature.
The proposed airport, he said, is critical, especially given the state’s 30-year Development Plan to make the state the model megacity in Africa and one of the best in the world, adding that “the airport would be effective in linking Lagos with Africa and the rest of the world through the aviation industry.” The Lekki airport is an important step in the right direction.”
According to him, “aviation has the unique ability to connect markets and opportunities that Lagos can provide.”
The chairperson of the 2022 Ehingbeti Summit, Mary Iwelumo, stated earlier at the event that the Ehingbeti summit is an important platform for private and public sector stakeholders in Lagos state to engage around the state developmental agenda as it continues to be an invaluable tool for shaping the growth ambition and has birthed several landmark projects in the state.
