The first wave of Nigerians fleeing war-torn Sudan has landed in Nigeria, despite valiant efforts to convey them to Egypt.
The Nigerian Air Force evacuated 376 people aboard a C13 military aircraft to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja late on May 3, 2023.
This comes after the Nigerian Diaspora Commission successfully transported the stranded nationals to Egypt’s Aswan Airport via bus. The federal government also stated that it had secured the services of several airlines to aid in the evacuation of Nigerians from Sudan, with other groups expected to arrive soon.
According to the commission, Sudan now accommodates roughly 5,500 Nigerian people, the majority of whom are students.
